15,000 DK WORKERS HELD

8-11-1988 Madras

Over 15,000 Dravida Kazhagam members (DK) (Skeptics of Tamilnadu State in India) volunteers including its leader K.Veeramani and ladies wing secretary Parvati Ganesan were arrested throughout Tamilnadu today for burning effigies of the Puri Sankaracharya, according to the DK here.

The agitators were protesting against the Sankaracharya's advocation of Sati (widow burning) and untouchability and his derogatory statements against harijan leader B.R.Ambedkar.

The DK claimed that over 1,000 DK volunteers including Veeramani and Parvathi were arrested for burning an effigy of the Sankaracharya.
