The illustrated Weekly of India in their May 29 June 4, 1988 issue carried a story "THE WITCH", authored by SNM Abdi on page 50, on a self-confessed witch Mrs.Ipsita Ray Chakraverti.
The story does not prove "Witch-craft" and what she really practices is hypnosis and not an occult phenomena or witch-craft.
In the issue of Illustrated Weekly dated June 26 July 2, 1988, there is another story on Miss Uttara Huddar under the title "STRANGER THAN FICTION", authored by Partha S.Banerjee.
As an introduction to the article, the author has mentioned that the Doordarshan's director-general, Bhaskar Ghose, could have won the Rationalist Association's one-lakh wager with this case. HONEE ANHONEE, the controversial television serial on transcendental 'true' stories, had, of course, not featured it, but the strange case of Uttara Huddar, the Maharashtrian college lecturer who is often transformed into an early nineteenth century Bengali Brahmin lady, is considered by leading parapsychologists as among the most definitive cases of reincarnation yet.
Whenever there is a transformation of the people to Scientific Temper, the reactionaries try their best to confuse people with the stories of para-normal. Spates of articles are being published now by the reactionary press to counteract the work of the reformers.
There are to types of the possession phenomena i.e.:
1. Professionals who get possessed by dead spirits or gods and goddesses spirits for exploitation of the gullible believers.
2. People who are sick. The cause for this, is suppression of emotions, the need for love, the need for recognition and attention, the biological need for sex, and the belief in soul, ghosts and dead spirits. An individual always try to suppress these emotions, and when it is beyond their capacity it explodes as hysteria or possession phenomena.
The article itself gives out the clue to the cause of this possession phenomena or the reincarnation phenomena of Sarada in Uttara Huddar. I am giving below some of the clues which had struck my thoughts while going through the article which will help you to find the cause of this ailment in Uttara Huddar. I want you to carefully read the article in the Illustrated weekly and let me know your findings as to whether the story "stranger Than Fiction" proves the theory of REINCARNATION.
1. Uttara Huddar is unmarried.
2. It was in her 33rd age she started behaving as Sarada.
3. For several years she had a persistent eczema, asthma and a gynaecological illness.
4. In late 1973 she was admitted to an ashram-like hospital of a homoeopathic physician.
5. She began looking upon the homoeopathic doctor as her husband.
6. She began chiding him when he was dining with a female assistant.
7. Uttara revealed that her name was Sarada that she hailed from Bengal and her husband was a Vaid.
8. She remained Sarada, comprehended only Bengali, draped herself in the traditional Bengali fashion the sari covering head. She worshipped Durga.
9. On an Ashtami day she was bitten on her right toe by a deadly cobra while plucking flowers. When she regained consciousness, she found herself among Marathas, In an alien home - but she believed she would return to Saptagram soon when her husband came to fetch her in the bullock cart.
10. After 3 weeks after Sarada had emerged at the homoeopathic physician's ashram, this strange early 19th century personality quite suddenly faded out.
11. But presently, the spell came again and again usually on Asthami days, the day of the snake bite.
12. There is a mild sensation at the top of the head, something like ants crawling before the onset of the Sarada phases. Then a feeling of tension occurs in the hands and feet. Then my tongue seems to go inside my mouth as if it is being pulled. I feel as if I am shrinking. There is also a feeling that my eyes are being pulled inside. There is a strange sensation in the left index finger. I weep a lot as I am going into the Sarada phase. Then I lose consciousness.
13. The story interested the 10,000 strong Bengali community in Nagpur especially one Dr. R.K.Sinha a homoeopathic physician.
14. The family tree of Sarada's father Brajesh Chattopadhyaya was published in a journal called Purnima in a 1907 issue.
15. Huddars' did not know Bengali and would not have read "Purnima" in a 1907 issue.
16. G.M.Huddar, Uttara's father, had two Bengali acquintances.
17. If Sarada's fluent Bengali did not snuff out the suspecion that the case was a hoax; her detailed knowledge of early 19th century traditions and customs surely put such doubts to rest.
18. In Nagpur, Uttara lived in a locality with scarcely any Bengali residents.
19. Karuna Mitra, a Bengali Neighbour said that "she knew every ritual, every puja detail. And her knowledge of such things as traditional jewellery was amazing.
20. Sarada never understood Marathi, Hindi, or English. But her Bengali was tinged with a Marathi accent.
21. Since the often long spells in the mid 70's, the Sarada phases have become much shorter usually lasting less than a day. It apparently occur during Durga Puja and at a few other times the year.
22. In one sever manifestation, Sarada lay as though half dead, a foetid odour fouling the air. Her tongue and lips turned blue, her toe was black.
23. Uttara's strong fascination for Bengali literature especially the novels of Sarat Chandra Chatterjee, which she read in translation and culture in earlylife, a fascination she shared, incidentally with her father G.M.Huddar.
I have written to Pritish Nandy, Editor of Illustrated Weekly of India, to give me the addresses of Mrs. Ipsita Roy Charkaverti and Uttara Huddar. Also the addresses of the authors as before I publish my conclusions I have to make some inquiries where Dr. Ian Stevenson and the authors have missed.
